Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and ADHD
Expressive Therapy Clinic offers a unique opportunity for health care professionals to participate in a self-paced 10 session program specifically designed for clients of all ages who experience ADHD symptoms. The adding of DBT Skills that are focused on addressing emotional dysregulation, impulsive control and inattention, which are often the most difficult symptoms of ADHD, are taught in this program. Manual and handouts included. (Optional creative exercises are also added and no talent is required). As an Art Psychotherapist as well as a Counsellor and DBT Consultant over the last 20 years I have found that learning skills both verbally and non-verbally can be an advantage for clients.
Learning Outcomes:
Participants will learn:
• About ADHD and descriptions of the symptoms of ADHD
• Recommended approaches medication and skills programs
• How DBT program could be re-structured to specifically assist ADHD Sufferers of all ages
• Which DBT skills would be most appropriate to assist with the specific symptoms an ADHD sufferer may experience
• How to target emotion regulation, impulsive behaviour with Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness to improve the lives of ADHD sufferers
• The role of a Coach in assisting this client group
Presenter:
Megan Shiell is passionate about the way Dialectical Behaviour Therapy can assist sufferers of emotional dysregulation. Over the past 9 year she has trained over 2,000 clinicians in the use of DBT and also in the use of DBT alongside an experiential therapy Art Therapy. Megan has presented both in Australia, and Internationally on the subject of DBT and its uses in mental health arenas and has published her work in DBT and Art Therapy in the ANZATA Journal 2008. Megan has recently written a chapter in a book titled “DBT-Informed Art Therapy in Practice” edited by Susan M. Clark to be published later in 2020. Megan conducts some Face to Face intensive DBT training programs in Coolangatta, Qld and also for organisations in other regions of Australia. Since 2014 she has trained around 2,000 clinicians.
