PACFA PD: Holding the Work: Sustainable Approaches to Trauma-Responsive Practice

PACFA College of Counselling invites you to join Alissa Miller and Brodie Luchetti for a 2-hour online workshop on sustainable approaches to trauma-responsive practice.

Please note: This presentation discusses trauma and its impact on practitioners, including vicarious trauma and burnout. We are sensitive to participants' own lived experiences of trauma. If this content raises anything for you, support is available through Lifeline on 13 11 14 (24 hours, 7 days).

Working with trauma is deeply meaningful, but it also asks a lot of us. Over time, the cumulative impact of sitting with distress, navigating risk, and staying emotionally present can quietly erode our capacity if we're not attending to how we sustain ourselves in the work. This workshop offers practical and reflective ways to remain trauma-responsive without becoming depleted. By integrating strategies such as nervous system awareness, intentional boundaries, and grounded reflective practice, counsellors can strengthen their ability to stay present, attuned, and effective across the long term.

The workshop combines current research, practice wisdom, and case-based application.

Learning outcomes:

  • Apply principles of trauma-responsive practice in ways that support both client safety and practitioner sustainability.
  • Critically reflect on the impact of ongoing trauma work on their own wellbeing, capacity, and clinical decision-making.
  • Identify early signs of vicarious trauma, burnout, and empathic strain in themselves and others.
  • Implement boundaries and workload practices that support ethical, effective, and sustainable care across different practice contexts.
