PACFA Insurance Requirements
All PACFA registrants in the Certified Practising and Clinical categories, as well as registrants of PACFA Member Associations listed on the PACFA register, are required to have both Professional Indemnity and Public Liability insurance for all aspects of their practice, across all locations in which they practise.
Minimum Coverage Requirements:
- Professional Indemnity Insurance: $2,000,000 per claim
- Public Liability Insurance: $20,000,000 per claim
All registrants must maintain valid and adequate insurance coverage for the whole duration of their registration.
Employer Coverage:
If you are covered by your employer, PACFA requires:
- An employer letter confirming your employment and coverage under their policy for counselling work, including both Professional Indemnity and Public Liability;
If your employer does not provide coverage for your counselling and/or psychotherapy work:
- You must arrange your own insurance that can meet the minimum coverage requirements.
Overseas Registrants:
For registrants based overseas, PACFA accepts insurance that meets the minimum requirements set by the relevant regulatory or registration body in the country where registrants practice.

Important Information
Professional Indemnity insurance is typically a ‘claims-made’ and notified contract, meaning an active policy is required at the time a claim is made for the policy to respond – not just when the service/advice was provided*. Complaints or claims can still be made months or years into the future. Without continuous active cover, counsellors and psychotherapists may be personally exposed to legal costs, compensation claims, and regulatory investigations linked to past services/advice provided, regardless of whether they are currently practising.
*Subject to unknown claims or circumstances, policy terms, conditions and exclusions.
It is important that you have an active Professional Indemnity policy in place whilst you are practicing. Through the PACFA partner page on the insurance.com.au website, you are able to purchase insurance for any of these listed modalities.
