Domestic Family Violence Counsellor

About The Gender Centre Inc. 

The Gender Centre Inc. is the peak, state-wide, multidisciplinary Centre of Excellence, providing a broad range of specialised health, welfare and housing services to the trans and gender diverse (TGD) population of NSW.  We provide Gender Affirming psycho social care, and support to  TGD people at every stage of their journey as they explore their authentic sense of self. For some clients this includes pre, mid, and post-transition support. The center continues to work as the leading frontline service provider to this community and their families in which we provide services across four domains: psycho-social support and well being, health, homelessness, and education.
The team at the Gender Centre is comprised of members with varied but complementary experience, qualifications, and skills that contribute to the achievement of the centre’s specific objectives, goals and client outcomes. Our team consists of caseworkers, counsellors, psychologists, outreach workers, students and volunteers.

   

What you’ll do

This position is responsible for the provision of specialist Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) counselling. The position aims to improve the emotional, social and mental wellbeing of adults, young people, and their families by providing trauma-informed clinical interventions and responses. The primary purpose of the role is the provision of effective, high-quality, culturally sensitive individual counselling and group programs for adults, young people and their families who are or have experienced trauma through Domestic Family Violence 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing a case load of victim-survivors of domestic and family violence, directly through initial contact, and risk assessment
  • Undertaking face-to-face therapy, utilising appropriate interventions including but not limited to cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, and structural family therapy
  • Facilitating support and educational groups
  • Working within a multi-disciplinary team, whose services survivors may require, such as housing, social services and health providers.
  • Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with key partners including local government and non-government referral agencies, in order to facilitate client access to those agencies and services
  • Fulfilling data entry, administration and reporting requirements in line with the Gender Centre Service Agreements as required
  • Maintaining client records and case notes, electronically, in a professional manner as per service policy
  • Ensuring that the experiences of service users inform the development and delivery of services through experience, recording surveys, and keeping accurate data and statistics 


The details

  • Part-time (28 hours per week), two-year contract
  • Located in Marrickville, NSW
  • Remuneration: Social Community Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 plus superannuation; SACS Employee Level 5 Pay point 1 current 

 

What you’ll bring

The successful candidate will hold tertiary qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, and/or Counselling, with current membership of a relevant professional body. They must have a minimum of 3 years' working experience in the DFV space.
Essential requirements:

  • Registration with the following associations: Australian Counseling Association (ACA) Clinical membership of the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation (PACFA) or in the case of social worker registration with AASW
  • Demonstrated extensive clinical experience in providing counselling, crisis intervention, complex risk assessments, and group work, to clients who have experienced DFV
  • Demonstrated high level understanding of the dynamics and effects of DFV, sexual assault, physical abuse and neglect, with a commitment to integrated models for working with clients who have experienced trauma
  • Demonstrated experience in prioritising a challenging and demanding workload; managing stressful situations; and applying advanced reasoning skills and independent professional judgement when dealing with situations of a novel or critical nature
  • Demonstrated understanding of the issues related to DFV, the criminal justice response to domestic violence, legislation in relation to apprehended domestic violence orders and an understanding of the family law system and child protection system
  • Knowledge and understanding of current DFV policies and guidelines, and child protection legislation with appropriate responses for clinical practice
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills (non-judgmental, non-discriminatory, non-dictatorial) as well as the ability to maintain confidentiality within a small community
  • Integrated understanding of specific issues for marginalised clients (First Nations peoples,individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and TGD people experiencing DFV)
  • Current NSW driver’s license
