Many Counsellors and Therapists start to see a child or adolescent and quickly realise they also need to work with the parents or other family members. However, working with several members of a family is very different to working with an individual.
There are different rules around confidentiality, for example. There can be competing needs which raise ethical issues for the Therapist. The contract for the work needs to be clearly defined and communicated from the start.
It’s quite common for Therapists or Counsellors to find themselves wondering how to ‘hold’ all the moving parts of this complex work, and become quite quickly overwhelmed.
In this one-day course, participants will learn how to decide whether family work is appropriate, how to set up sessions, maintain boundaries, engage more than one person in the room, keep the sessions balanced, and manage various personalities and pitfalls that come with this work.
The course is designed to give both beginner and experienced therapists the opportunity to learn systemic concepts when working with family groups to build confidence.
CPD Hours: This event counts as 6 hours of category A CPD for PACFA’s membership renewal requirements.
