Do all roads lead to Rome or can you sometimes find yourself in Timbuktu?

A conversation between Toni and Alison on the intersections in the philosophy of practice between counselling and psychotherapy. Questions they will explore relate to the inherent values underpinning the implied difference between counselling and psychotherapy and to see whether this translates into their personal practices with clients. Some of the issues they intend to explore are around theories of:

  • Human Nature
  • Understandings of Change
  • Health and ill health
  • Spirituality and Body/Mind

Break out rooms will be used for participants to explore their own values and beliefs about their client practice and how this translates into their teaching role.

PRESENTERS:

Dr. Alison Strasser DProf (Psychotherapy & Counselling), MA, BA Hons
Alison is a practising psychotherapist, coach and supervisor. She is also an educator with a passion for imparting how existential themes can be integrated into every therapeutic approach. She was instrumental in creating the existential curriculum for many counselling and psychotherapy trainings in Australia and founded Centre for Existential Practice in 2008. Her doctorate focused on the process of supervision, work that led to a framework for supervisor training, now a major component of CEP’s annual program. Alison co-authored Time-Limited Existential Therapy with her father, Freddie Strasser and she is currently working on a revised edition.

Toni Neil PhD candidate, MCouns, GCM&FCouns, BMus(Ed)

Building on her teaching background, she moved into sessional lecturing at Christian Heritage College in 2010 before becoming the coordinator of the Master of Counselling program in 2014.
