Typical Fees & Rebates

In a PACFA survey conducted in May 2021, the most commonly reported (46%) counselling and psychotherapy fees were between $100–$160 per hour. Around 24% of those surveyed offer fees lower than $100, and only 11% had fees higher than $160.

Many PACFA members also reported that they are open to offering a sliding scale fee arrangement. A sliding scale allows fees to be adjusted based on a client’s individual circumstances, including financial capacity, making counselling and psychotherapy more accessible for those experiencing financial hardship. Clients are encouraged to discuss fees openly with their counsellor to explore flexible options where appropriate.

Fees for couple and family counselling are often slightly higher than individual sessions. This reflects the increased complexity of working with multiple clients within a single session, as well as the additional preparation and clinical expertise required.

In many cases, counselling fees are lower than the out-of-pocket ‘gap’ charged by psychologists, even when Medicare rebates apply. Clients with private health insurance may also be eligible for counselling rebates, depending on their policy. Providers such as Bupa, Medibank, ahm, Police Health, Emergency Services Health, St Luke’s Health, Phoenix Health, CUA, Doctor’s Health, and Grand United may offer rebates, with this list continuing to expand over time.

Access to Counsellors

Counsellors are highly accessible across Australia. In 2021, 63% of respondents reported they could see a new client within 7 days, and 23% could accommodate an urgent request within 48 hours.

You can find a PACFA-registered counsellor or psychotherapist via our ‘Find a therapist’ directory.
