Child and Adolescent Mental Health E-Learning Course

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health e-learning course (60 CPD hours) provides a comprehensive foundation for clinicians seeking to enhance their knowledge and skills in working with young people. It is most relevant to counsellors and psychotherapists who have a foundational understanding of mental health and wish to expand their clinical competence in the area of child and adolescent mental health assessment, formulation, and treatment interventions.

Delivered through six self-paced online modules, the course integrates a comprehensive resource library including readings, video demonstrations, resources, reflective learning tasks and an online multiple-choice assessment. Enrolment includes 12 months of access to all materials, allowing participants flexibility in completing the training.

Course Structure: (6 Modules – 10 CPD hours each; total 60 CPD hours):

Module 1. Child and Adolescent Development
Module 2. Engagement, Assessment and Formulation
Module 3. Anxiety Disorders of Childhood and Youth
Module 4. Depression and Mood Disorders
Module 5. Suicide Risk Assessment and Management
Module 6. Serious Mental Health Conditions

Learning Objectives:
• Identify key developmental stages and their influence on emotional, social and cognitive functioning in children and adolescents
• Recognise and describe common mental health presentations in young people, including anxiety, depression, behavioural difficulties, and emerging personality issues
• Conduct developmentally appropriate assessments that integrate individual, family and systemic factors
• Formulate presenting problems using biopsychosocial and systemic frameworks relevant to child and adolescent contexts
• Apply evidence-based therapeutic strategies for managing anxiety, mood and behavioural difficulties in young people
• Assess and manage risk, including self-harm and suicidality, using best-practice and ethical guidelines

After completion of this course, participants will have developed a comprehensive understanding of the range of mental health issues commonly experienced by children and adolescents, including their key features, developmental considerations, and implications for assessment and intervention.
