Participants will engage with sample supervision practices, using the GSAT to assess core supervisory competencies while also examining the role of race, culture, power, and identity in the supervisory process. Through the use of video analysis, group discussion, and structured reflection, the workshop highlights how the GSAT can be used not only as a feedback and evaluation tool but also as a catalyst for cultivating cultural humility, critical consciousness, and equity-focused supervision practices.
The session will be delivered across four key areas:
- Introduction to the GSAT: Overview of the tool, its development, psychometric properties, and value across disciplines.
- Applying the GSAT in Practice: Use of video-based supervision examples for practical, hands-on application. Participants will score and discuss examples, with a focus on feedback strategies.
- Culturally Responsive Supervision: Exploration of theories and models related to culture, race, power, and identity in supervision. Emphasis on self-awareness, systemic factors, and inclusive practice.
- Integrating Cultural Humility into GSAT Use: Discussion on how to ensure the GSAT supports — not overlooks — diversity, equity, and inclusion in assessment and development.
- Feedback and Reflection: Using GSAT items to provide feedback that supports learning, growth, and cultural responsiveness. Encouraging a feedback culture rooted in trust and critical reflection.
Prior to the webinar, participants will receive a digital version of the GSAT to use during the session. Interactive tools including reflection prompts, Mentimeter polls, breakout rooms, a shared whiteboard, and a handouts and resource guide will be used throughout.
Learning outcomes:
- Develop a clear understanding of the GSAT, its purpose, structure, and application across diverse disciplines.
- Gain practical experience in using the GSAT, including assessing recorded supervision sessions and providing effective, constructive feedback.
- Examine the benefits and challenges of using video to support objective assessment and reflective learning in supervision.
- Explore the role of cultural humility, identity, and power in supervision, and how these are reflected in supervisory relationships and organisational contexts.
- Identify strategies to address personal biases and assumptions, enhancing capability and confidence in culturally responsive supervision.
- Apply a cultural lens to GSAT use, ensuring that assessments and feedback are inclusive, equity-informed, and support the development of both supervisors and supervisees.
- Understand how supervisors can foster critical consciousness and support inclusive, anti-oppressive supervision practices in everyday settings.
