Please note: This session engages with themes of torture, trauma, and human rights violations. We acknowledge the lived experiences of those from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds and approach this content with care and respect.
The session will draw upon the experiences of a multidisciplinary health team at Companion House, a Canberra refugee health (medical and counselling) service. It will explore the role of empathy, reflect on the impact of the refugee experience, break down the stages of the refugee journey, consider the impact of Australia's humanitarian program, share a framework for trauma recovery, and reflect on the clinician's own emotional reactions. The session will include case studies, narratives and statistical data.
Learning outcomes:
Participants will:
- Deepen their understanding of the diverse contexts of refugee experience.
- Develop understandings of current settlement processes on the lives of people from refugee background.
- Enhance knowledge about trauma recovery, particularly in a refugee context.
