Return to Work SA Updates Fee Schedules for Mental Health Services

Return to Work SA has announced its updated fee schedules for mental health services, effective from 1 July 2024. The newly-published fee schedules have been updated to better support the vital work of mental health professionals, including psychotherapists and counsellors.

11 July 2024

The new Counselling fee schedule and policy replaced the previous one on 1 July 2024. This update, published by the Minister for Industrial Relations in the South Australian Government Gazette, outlines the maximum fees chargeable for listed services, exclusive of GST. Where applicable, GST can be added over and above the gazetted fee.

Key Details of the Updated Fee Schedule
  • Effective Date: The new fee schedule came into effect on 1 July 2024.
  • Fee Increase: Counselling fees will increase by 6%, with the new hourly rate for services set at $172.70.
Basis for Fee Determination

Return to Work SA's fees are established based on average charges to private patients, as mandated by the Return to Work Act 2014. The determination process involves:

  • Formal Consultation: Engaging with the relevant professional associations, including PACFA, during February and March 2024.
  • Data Analysis: Utilising data provided by Medicare and the Australian Bureau of Statistics to conduct a detailed analysis of average charges to private patients.
