The Ending is in the Beginning: Utilising a Gestalt focus

PACFA

The Ending is in the Beginning: How a Gestalt focus on process can support good therapeutic outcomes

6:00pm - 7:30pm AEDT 13 December

While there are practical considerations and a range of tasks that support both the beginning and ending aspects of therapeutic work, how therapists actually utilise these is often shaped by other things – the therapist’s history, their beliefs, their stories of self. Often these things are implicit in our work, unconsciously shaping the therapeutic container for better and for worse. For example, if we feel conflicted about the value or efficacy of what we do, we may begin with clients in ways that are uncertain or ambivalent. WE are not clear about what might be possible. At other times we might overcompensate by making promises we cannot deliver. Likewise, ending well with clients can be captive to the same unconscious processes. We hold on too long, or let go too easily, caught as we are by the complexities of our own experiences of endings. This seminar will explore the importance of the beginning and ending process in clinical practice and  how bringing a greater level of awareness to these processes can support greater therapeutic effectiveness.

Through this seminar, the participant will gain:

  • A deeper appreciation of the importance of beginnings and endings
  • An understanding of how failing to attend to these aspects of clinical practice can contribute to client dissatisfaction and increases the risk of complaint
  • An understanding of how personal experience, values and self-beliefs might be unconsciously shaping how these processes are managed
  • The opportunity to explore and reframe this in ways to support greater effectiveness

This webinar counts as 1.5 hours of Category A CPD (Continuing Professional Development) if you participate online, or 1.5 hours of Category B CPD if you are watching the recording.
