What is "GBKS"?:
The domains of gender, body, kinship, and sexuality (GBKS) include but are not limited to “LGBTQI” lived experiences, as well as Sistergirls, Brotherboys, fa'afafine, fa’afatama, asexual/ace people, aromantic/aro people, non-binary and agender people (including those who do not identify as “trans”), people with intersex characteristics who seek recognition distinct from “LGBTQ”, polyamorous and/or multi-partnered people, people in BDSM/kink and/or queerplatonic forms of kinship, and many more people who matter.

About our Applied Professional Ethics series:

Professional codes of ethics and their normative interpretations have been critiqued for cisgenderist, heteronormative, endosexist, mononormative, and kink-negative bias. These codes were developed without adequate community consultation or consideration of the extensive peer-reviewed evidence on the therapeutic needs and experiences of people and/or within communities of people with diversity in gender, body, kinship, and sexuality lived experiences.

Due to these gaps, many people with these lived experiences have reported that popular approaches to professional ethics are often harmful and problematic for us and our lived experience communities. In this series of webinars, PACFA’s Gender, Body, Kinship, and Sexuality (GBKS) Leadership Group will fill this gap in awareness about how to apply ethical principles to clinical practice with people and communities with lived experience of diversity in gender, body, kinship, and sexuality. Drawing on evidence-informed and internationally recognised guidelines for ethical clinical practice and community wisdom from therapy participants and therapists with lived experience, we will provide guidance on how to apply professional ethics in a culturally safe, anti-oppressive way with people whose gender, body, kinship, and sexuality lived experiences have been and continue to be minoritised and marginalised in our profession.

Who can attend?
This series is open to all practitioners, whether or not they have relevant lived experience.

About this workshop:
In this workshop, we will explain how clinician self-disclosure about gender, body, kinship, and sexuality lived experience can be essential to ethical practice with our communities. We will:
review peer-reviewed research showing the many benefits of practitioner self-disclosure for therapists with and without relevant lived experience,
explore well-established guidelines and techniques for ethical self-disclosure used by practitioners working within these lived experience communities,
discuss guidelines for navigating some common ethical dilemmas and challenges, and
support practitioners to address issues of power and privilege through the clinical practice of social positioning.
Resources for further learning will be provided.
