CPD18 Yoga Therapy, Breathwork, Pranayama & the Science of Breathing

This course examines traditional pranayama, breath based meditation and yogic breathing within a culturally trauma sensitive and academically grounded framework, integrating them with contemporary research in respiratory physiology, neuroscience, psychophysiology, autonomic regulation and behavioural medicine. Participants explore how breathing affects vagal tone, interoceptive awareness, emotional processing, sleep, inflammatory response and stress physiology. The training also examines breathing biomechanics, breathing patterns, nasal function, carbon dioxide tolerance and the somatic signatures of anxiety and trauma.

The course has been developed specifically to ensure that breath-based and yoga-informed practices are translated into clinically relevant, trauma-informed skills applicable within counselling and psychotherapy contexts, rather than taught as standalone spiritual practice.
In particular, the training focuses on:
• Use of breathwork for emotional and autonomic nervous system regulation in clinical presentations such as anxiety, stress, and trauma
• Trauma-informed application of breathing practices, including safety considerations and contraindications
• Integration of breath-based interventions within counselling sessions as adjunct therapeutic tools (e.g. grounding, stabilisation, psychoeducation)
• Clear scope-of-practice guidance, clinical boundaries, and appropriate referral considerations

All content is framed within contemporary therapeutic application, with emphasis on safe, client-centred use in psychotherapy and counselling settings.
