An Introduction to Clinical Art & Play Therapy

This comprehensive workshop offers participants an in-depth introduction to clinical art and play therapy as a powerful, evidence-informed approach for engaging clients across the lifespan, suitable for work with children, adolescents, adults, and families.

Topics covered include:

• Definition and history of clinical art and play therapy
• Key developmental stages of play and their impact on emotional, physical, and social growth
• The “image of the child” and whole-person case formulation
• Directive and non-directive therapeutic approaches
• Neurodevelopmental and neurosequential principles in trauma-informed art and play therapy
• Creating emotionally safe therapeutic environments
• Assessment and case formulation using art and play therapy
• Ethical and safe unpacking of clients’ art and play products
• Setting up therapy spaces and mobile therapy kits
• Addressing diversity and client preferences
• Evidence-based practice principles and responding to misconceptions
• Ethical and legal considerations, including clinical documentation

Participants are equipped with over a dozen practical activities they can apply immediately in their practice. Each participant receives a Welcome Starter Kit containing essential art and play therapy props to actively engage in these experiential activities and begin their clinical art and play therapy journey.

The workshop is delivered via a self-paced online format with direct communication opportunities with the presenter. It is the first workshop in a postgraduate training series, offering pathways to Master’s and/or PhD qualifications through the Academy’s partnership with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).

Presenter:

Dr. Rosa Bologna is the founder and director of the Academy of Art & Play Therapy. She is a registered psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia (PBA), a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS), and a member of the American Psychological Association (APA). She is also an accredited clinical supervisor and is on the British Psychological Society’s Register of Applied Psychology Practice Supervisors (RAPPS).
