PACFA PD: Art Psychotherapy in the context of Britain's Social Prescribing scheme

PACFA College of Creative and Experiential Therapies invites you to join Jess Baum for a 2-hour experiential presentation and workshop exploring Social Prescribing and the growing field of Creative Health — and how the Art Therapy profession and Arts in Health sector can work together towards an inclusive, ethical community of practice.

In a world that requires radical, ethical, equitable and inclusive care, this experiential presentation and workshop invites you to learn more about Social Prescribing — one of the fastest growing public health care innovations in the world. Jess will introduce delegates to the field of Creative Health in England (where Social Prescribing was pioneered through its integration into the national healthcare system through the NHS 10-year health care plan in 2019) and how she bridges her identity as a community-based Art Psychotherapist with her role as an Arts in Health facilitator working within the intervention framework of Social Prescribing.

She will illustrate how the Art Therapy profession and Arts in Health sector can become aligned, working alongside each other whilst maintaining their unique identities and boundaries to support service users and colleagues from across the health care system. She will do this exploring the historic conflict, tension, resistance, and fear surrounding the relationship and set out her rationale for holding a more nuanced, compassionate and critical discussion to working together at the space of possibility: a Creative Health continuum model.

Over the course of the session, Jess will take you on an explorative journey of the Creative Health sector. You'll discover the similarities, differences, and intersections between Art Therapy and Arts in Health practice learning from Jess's own work as an expert bridging the fields. She will highlight international work, best practice and the challenges. You'll gain insights into this timely and pressing subject through arts-based experiential activities, take a deep dive into the research and theoretical concepts of working across these professions, and have the opportunity to join the conversation and ask questions sharing your thinking and creativity.

Participants will be invited to consider what Creative Health might mean for their profession and the colleagues and clients they work with, and how it could support their work in future from their own unique perspective.

Presenter: Jess Baum

Based in Bristol, England, Jess Baum is an independent HCPC-registered Art Psychotherapist.

Jess works at the intersections of the Art Therapy profession and the Arts in Health sector, helping to design, develop and deliver Creative Health services by collaborating with service users and community groups, and consulting with organisations including the NHS. She manages and delivers several Creative Health initiatives for adults, children and young people across Bristol and North Somerset supporting the region's Social Prescribing services. This includes managing the Arts-on-Referral route for Vanguard, an innovative pilot service driven by the regional NHS Integrated Care Board offering a community-based Social Prescribing approach to improving outcomes of vulnerable children and young people in the region.

Jess manages the Art Psychotherapy provision at a supported living centre for adults with Learning Disabilities in the city and has a small private practice working in a rural setting on the outskirts of Bristol from The Homeland Project, the nature-based creative therapeutic organisation she co-founded.

With an interest in the interplay between art-making, social and ecological justice, and public health, Jess enjoys supporting projects that focus on improving people's lives and empowering communities through access to the arts and an equitable Creative Health care system. She receives grants for her work and is currently lead artist on a community project funded by Historic England looking at ways in which minority groups and refugee communities have historically experienced urban spaces and how they can influence better city planning for the future.

Jess writes about and presents on the subject of Creative Health, and in 2025, BAAT published her Cultivating Creativity Calendar — an open-source resource for young people. She has been an advisor to the International Journal of Art Therapy, and is a visiting lecturer at the University of South Wales and the University of the West of England. Jess specialises in working with clay and working outdoors.
