The aim of this webinar is to support Relationship Therapists and all therapists to understand separation and divorce in the context of the Family Law Act when dealing with Couples who may be considering or have decided to separate.
This webinar is to provide therapists with an introductory however solid understanding of options open to their clients. It will support therapists to be supported by fact and to have a solid line of referral for these clients who are moving beyond relationship repair.

Session Outline:


Divorce Basics
- Gain a solid understanding of the fundamentals of divorce, including when and where to apply, relevant legislation, eligibility criteria, time limits on property settlements, and considerations for relationships under two years, with or without children.

Emotional Responses and Dynamics
- Explore the common emotional responses and dynamics that come into play just before and during separation. Understand the differences in impact and acceptance of separation on each party, illustrated through a graph depicting processing and grieving differences.

The Property
- Understand key principles of Family Law Act re property settlements

The Children
- Receive insights into parenting arrangements, including topics such as Family Dispute Resolution (FDR), the best interests of children, the impact of separation on children at different developmental stages, and addressing situations involving Domestic and Family Violence (DFV).

Our Role as Relationship Counsellors
- Explore your role as a relationship counsellor in depth, understanding how you can best support couples facing separation and divorce.

Things to Avoid Saying to Clients
- Learn from the experiences of others and avoid common pitfalls, including misinformed advice and the use of incorrect terminology like 'custody.'

Tips for Effective Communication
- Discover the right way to communicate and share information with your clients, emphasizing the importance of recommending legal advice and making appropriate referrals.

The presenter: Melanie Zammit


Melanie is a Mediator and Counsellor based in Newcastle. She has been working in the field of counselling and conflict resolution for over 15 years, and has become known for her compassionate and relational approach to therapy and to mediation.

In her private practice Melanie specialises in Relationship Therapy and Separation and Divorce mediation. Melanie has recently been accredited by the Australian Attorney-General as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner. She has also received accreditation through the National Mediation Assessment System (NMAS).

Melanie also facilitates behaviour change program for Corrective Services NSW for male perpetrators of DFV.
