Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Anger

Presented by Dr Raymond Chip Tafrate

Across different treatment settings practitioners routinely see clients whose anger reactions contribute to significant loss and suffering. While anger is a frequent and universal human emotion, it has received surprisingly little attention as a clinical problem.

The majority of the material in this workshop was covered in the workshop previously named Formulation and Treatment Strategies for Intimate Partner Violence, Abuse and Anger.

When addressing anger, practitioners commonly engage in unproductive conversations (e.g., clients venting about unfair actions of others) and struggle to identify clear treatment targets.

In this session, participants will practice assessing the key features of client anger reactions by applying a 6-stage Anger Episode Model Interview to understand how anger is experienced and expressed in the client’s real-life interactions.

Learning Objectives

(1) Demonstrate knowledge of definitional and diagnostic conceptualizations, common co-morbidity patterns, and other anger related facts

(2) Understand client anger reactions according to a 6-stage sequential anger episode model and practice conducting an anger episode interview to efficiently identify relevant treatment targets

(3) Conceptualize anger interventions for adolescents and adults across broad stages of the treatment process: preparation and engagement, managing common anger triggers, restructuring anger prompting thoughts, altering dysfunctional internal experiences, and changing destructive expressive patterns

* All participants will receive a discount code to the following e-book, which serves as the textbook for the course: The Practitioner’s Guide to Anger Management: Customizable Interventions, Treatments, and Tools for Clients with Problem Anger (2019; New Harbinger/Impact)

This event counts as 5 hours of category A CPD for PACFA’s membership renewal requirements
