First Person Plural: On Multiple Selves

Centre for Existential Practice (CEP)

First Person Plural: On Multiple Selves

Online via zoom

Presenter: Linda Finlay, PhD

Linda has always been fascinated by the multiplicities of our (inter-)subjective relationships. In this conversation, Linda will address the question of how we can existentially understand – and effectively work with – what seems to be the ubiquitous appearance of different ‘selves’ (of both client and therapist) in the therapy room. She will argue that the metaphorical use of ‘selves’ can be a useful way of containing a felt sense of fragmentation but that clients’ dissociation is best seen as on a continuum rather than fixing them with a diagnostic label. She will ask: should our aim in existential psychotherapy be unification? Or should we set aside ontological assumptions and simply work with what/who presents itself/themselves?
