Essentials for Working with Adolescents

23 April 2024, 10:00am - 1:00pm AEST

This intensive 3-hour workshop is designed for counsellors wishing to work with adolescents, or who currently have teen clients and are feeling out of their depth with how to effectively support them.

Using the latest research, evidence-based frameworks and experiential knowledge, you will leave the workshop feeling passionate and well-equipped to implement the specific counselling approaches required for adolescent populations.

We will explore:
• Common pitfalls that us well-meaning counsellors make working with teens
(eg. Managing resistance to therapy, how to involve families) and discuss practical solutions
• Tried-and-tested counselling approaches that work with (not against!) the unique developmental needs of adolescents
• Impactful rapport-building techniques and practical strategies for working with challenges, such as power struggles and “taboo” conversations

The workshop will be limited to 25 participants to create an intimate and collaborative co-learning environment, through the use of case studies, group work, and personalised supervision to ensure all attendees are able to reach their potential in supporting our young people.

Learning outcomes upon completion of this workshop:
1) Have an understanding of the unique developmental and social needs of adolescents
2) Possess a diverse range of skills and therapeutic approaches to improve rapport building with adolescent populations
3) Understand common pitfalls counsellors make with adolescents and confidently implement their practical solutions
4) Deliver therapeutic approaches tailored for adolescents, addressing unique issues arising in teen populations with a high level of understanding and skill implementation
